Pediatric Special Needs
Project D.O.C.C. (delivery of chronic care) is medical education program at Toledo Children’s Hospital made possible by a grant through Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council. The program works to improve the quality of life for children who are chronically ill and/or disabled by encouraging parents to be teachers.
Project D.O.C.C. emphasizes that a family facing the challenges of a chronic illness needs three essential ingredients to live successfully in its community:
- a pivotal physician
- access to community resources
- the highest quality of life possible for the child
In addition, Project D.O.C.C. encourages family partnerships with health care professionals, as physicians can help families understand their unique needs. Through a “family-centered care” philosophy, Project D.O.C.C. offers families positive experiences through life-long management of health care issues.

Safety Tips for Children with Special Needs
Injury is the leading cause of death in children over one year of age. In 2001, 5,526 children ages 14 and under died from unintentional injuries. In addition, each year more than 92,000 children are permanently disabled. Children who have chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma and seizures are at the same risk for injury as other children. Unfortunately, children with disabilities in cognitive, emotional or social limitations have higher risks of injury than their peers.
This book, Safety Tips for Children with Special Needs (available in Spanish), contains general injury prevention information. Each family's situation is unique and each child has his or her own challenges. We encourage you to seek guidance from a medical specialist or an injury prevention professional if you have questions that are not addressed in this book.
At Toledo Children's Hospital we think kids are special. And that's just the way we treat them!

TCH Healthy Kids
As childhood obesity teeters near epidemic rates, researchers continue to analyze risks associated with poor diet and exercise habits; such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. In addition to these risks, obese children may also suffer long term consequences, as more than 70% of obese children (who do not adopt healthier habits) are expected to maintain their obesity through adulthood.
If your child struggles to maintain a healthy weight or wants to learn more about healthy eating and exercise, Toledo Children’s Healthy Kids (TCH Kids) can help. TCH Kids, a 10-week nutrition and fitness program designed for children ages 8 – 12 and their parents, combines fun activities with fitness and nutrition to teach children how to build lifelong, healthy habits.
Program highlights include:
• Nutrition classes
• Grocery store tour
• Fast food education
• Healthy beverages and snacks
• Active play and exercise
TCH Kids classes are taught by registered dietitians, exercise specialists and education experts. To register your child for a TCH Kids course, call 419-291-4076 or e-mail jodi.augustyniak@promedica.org.
